Responding to a Nosebleed in the Classroom
Nosebleeds are common among school children and usually not serious, but teachers must respond calmly and effectively to ensure safety and prevent complications. According to UAE Teachers’ Standards, student well-being and quick first aid response are essential.
Steps to Manage a Nosebleed
-
Stay calm and reassure the student.
-
Position the student properly – have them sit upright and lean slightly forward to prevent blood from flowing down the throat.
-
Pinch the soft part of the nose (just below the bridge) firmly for 10–15 minutes.
-
Encourage breathing through the mouth and avoid talking or swallowing blood.
-
Apply a cold compress to the nose or the bridge if available.
-
Seek medical attention if:
-
Bleeding continues after 20 minutes
-
The student feels dizzy or weak
-
The nosebleed follows an injury
-
Precautions
-
Do not tilt the head back – this can cause blood to enter the throat.
-
Keep the student calm and seated.
-
Record the incident according to school protocol if necessary.
By following these steps, teachers create a safe and supportive environment, ensuring student health and aligning with professional standards.
