Predictive and Probing Questions in the Classroom

1. Predictive Questions

  • Purpose: Encourage students to anticipate outcomes, make hypotheses, or foresee consequences based on current knowledge or observations.

  • Characteristics:

    • Encourage students to connect concepts and think ahead.

2. Probing Questions

  • Purpose: Help teachers dig deeper into student thinking to clarify reasoning, expand understanding, or uncover misconceptions.

  • Characteristics:

    • Often follow initial student responses.

    • Encourage students to explain, justify, or elaborate.

    • Stimulate higher-order thinking and reflective learning.

  • Examples:

    • “Can you explain why you think that?”

    • “What evidence supports your answer?”

  • Predictive Questions: Foster hypothesis formation, foresight, and analytical thinking.

  • Probing Questions: Promote deeper understanding, critical reflection, and problem-solving skills.
