Connecting Synchronous and Asynchronous Learning to Blended and Hybrid Teaching

1. Blended Teaching

  • Definition Recap: Combines online learning with face-to-face instruction, but not necessarily at the same time.

  • Connection with Synchronous/Asynchronous:

    • Asynchronous components:

      • Online modules, recorded videos, quizzes, discussion boards that students complete at their own pace.

    • Synchronous components:

      • Face-to-face classroom sessions, live online Q&A or group discussions.

  • Example:

    • Students watch a recorded science video (asynchronous) at home, then participate in a live class discussion and lab activity (synchronous).

2. Hybrid Teaching

  • Definition Recap: Some students attend physically while others join live online simultaneously.

  • Connection with Synchronous/Asynchronous:

    • Mostly synchronous:

      • Live class streamed for online learners while in-person students participate.

    • Can include asynchronous elements:

      • Recorded sessions for students who cannot attend live, online quizzes, or discussion boards.

  • Example:

    • A math lesson is conducted in the classroom (synchronous). Online students join via Zoom in real-time, while a recorded version is made available for those who miss the session (asynchronous).
